October High School Events

College Womxn’s Group
Tuesday, October 8th, 12:30pm-1:30pm 
This event is for college folks, food will be provided, and this month’s topic will be how to make it through the challenges of college life as a first-generation student,  especially a student of color, in a campus culture that might not represent your experience. Special guest Charleen Ramirez-Mares will share about her experiences and keys to success. We will be in Room 3018 of the CU Denver Student Commons Building at 1201 Larimer St, Denver, CO 80204 (the corner of Speer and Larimer). If you don’t attend school at the Auraria Campus, park at the Tivoli Parking Garage and bring your receipt and we will cover your parking.

FAFSA and Financial Aid Night
Tuesday, October 8th, 6pm-8pm 
For parents and students, this is your chance to get your questions answered about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and other types of scholarships and financial aid for college! Get individual help completing your FAFSA from scholarship and financial aid expert Debra Suniga, and learn about resources for scholarships, including updates on Girls Inc. Movie Night – Isn’t It Romantic?
Thursday, October 10th, 6pm-9pm
Watch a fun comedy movie starring Rebel Wilson that also deconstructs the messages we get about relationships in movies. Meet new friends, eat snacks, and laugh with us!

G3 Data Analytics
Wednesdays, October 16th-November 20th – 6pm-8pm 
Come learn how to use data science and train for exciting STEM careers! Demystify big data and get empowered to use data in your life! Develop confidence and skills to get ahead in your math, science, social science, and college-level courses. We will meet every Wednesday for 6 weeks from October 16th through November 20th, and dinner will be served. To participate, you need to commit to attending all 6 sessions. #Adulting Night: Cars
Thursday, October 17th, 5:30pm-8:30pm 
Our #Adulting series, by request from Girls Inc. participants, is all about the skills you need to succeed now, and for the rest of your life! This month, we are learning all about cars! If you have a car or want to have one someday, this is for you! Learn about car insurance, car buying and payments, and how to change a tire, identify car parts and how they work, and other car care basics from Registered Mechanic Crystal Scott. Dinner will be provided. This event will be a field trip, so space is limited, RSVPs to smcgill@gidenver.org and permission slips are required. The RSVP deadline is October 15th.

THRIVE
Saturday, October 19th, 10:30am-1pm
Run by Girls Inc. participants, this group is all about how to express yourself, manage stress, and have fun with art. Meet new people and enjoy creative projects! Breakfast will be provided.

College Tour at CSU-Fort Collins 
Monday, October 21st, 9am-5pm
Make the most of this day off school for Denver Public Schools and join us to visit the campus of Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado! Tour the campus, learn about the admissions process, options for courses, majors, and student activities and services at CSU. Breakfast snacks and lunch on campus will be provided. Spaces are limited, and RSVPs and permission slips are required. RSVP to smcgill@gidenver.org by October 18th to attend this exciting trip!

Professional Communication Workshop 
Wednesday, October 23rd, 6pm-8:30pm
Join Guest speaker Maria Cordero, an experienced human resources professional, to learn how to put your best foot forward when job hunting, communicating with co-workers, or just wanting to get your message across clearly and professionally in everyday life! Dinner will be provided.

Workin’ it Out: Yoga Class
Thursday, October 24th, 5pm-7pm
Get flexible, build strength, relieve stress and learn new yoga techniques and poses with guest instructor Kate Edelstein! Yoga mats and water bottles provided, just bring yourself and your comfortable clothes!

Tutoring and Scholarship Help – Come get help with any homework or studying you might need a hand with, or have individual support to search for scholarships, research colleges, work on personal statements, resumés, or any other items you might need to prepare for college or your career, or succeed in school. This is available every Monday from 4pm to 6pm and every Wednesday from 4:30pm to 6pm when school is in session and you can come for all or part of the time.

Programming

Health & Sexuality Workshops
This component, for participants in the 9th-12th grade, includes a series of two interactive, skill-building sessions that focus on the motivation and skills needed to maintain a healthy and positive sexuality.

High School Prep Workshops
Ready to succeed in high school? This component is for participants in the 9th and 10th grade. You’ll explore your potential, bond with peers, acknowledge fears and feel ready for high school.

College Prep Workshops
Advanced, hands-on learning opportunities for college admissions, resumes, financial aid, scholarships and interview skills needed to complete portfolios for college admissions.

Girl & Family College Tours
Prospective students and their parents/guardians will take campus tours to learn about the facilities, as well as student life, culture on campus, academics, and programs offered by the institution

Spring Break College Tour
Prospective students will tour colleges and universities across Colorado.
