Program Volunteers

What do program volunteers do?
Program volunteers assist instructors who deliver Girls Inc. curriculum and facilitate interactive activities to girls in 1st-10th grade. Program volunteers help to cultivate a safe and positive environment for girls through behavior management and inspiring a culture of sisterhood.

What does program time look like at Girls Inc.?
After school programming: Girls participate in our after-school program on weekdays from 3:00-6:30pm. Girls are dropped off between 3:00-3:30pm, they eat supper from 3:30-4:30pm, and then participate in Girls Inc. programs from 4:30-6:00pm. Pick-up time is between 6:00-6:30pm. On Mondays and Wednesdays we deliver Girls Inc. curriculum; on Tuesdays and Thursdays we offer homework help for girls through tutoring. On Fridays, girls participate in Bold Futures Mentoring or in ‘Fresh Fridays’ each week; there are no programs on the last Friday of each session.

Summer programming: During the summer, programs are all day from 8:00am-5:30pm Monday-Thursday. Girls are dropped off between 8:00-8:45am; they eat a morning snack and we have announcements at 9:00am. The first class lasts from 9:00am-12:00pm; lunch is 12:00-1:30pm, and our second class is from 1:30-4:30pm, followed by pick up time from 4:30-5:30pm. Classes range in topic, from life skills to science/technology to health and nutrition. All classes are age-appropriate for girls, informal and fun! Our required volunteer training for summer will be held in early June, and volunteer recruitment will take place starting in March 2019.

When are program volunteer shifts?
Programs run Monday-Fridays for elementary school and Monday-Thursday for middle school programs. Program volunteer shifts are from 3:00-6:30pm, and we ask volunteers to commit to two shifts a weekShifts are the same each week for the duration of programming.

Eureka! and STEM volunteers usually volunteer on the second Saturday of the month during 3-4 hour shifts in the morning and afternoon. We ask Eureka! and STEM volunteers to commit to one volunteer shift per month.

Please check the individual volunteer position description for the schedule requirements, and ensure this aligns with your availability.

When are the next set of program dates?
Monday, January 7 – Thursday, April 25, 2019. New program volunteers will start the week of January 7, 2019.

What are the training requirements?
All new volunteers are required to attend our all-day training and inclusiveness workshop. At our training you will meet other volunteers, understand Girls Inc. as an organization and learn how to work with girls to meet them where they are. Thank you for understanding that we DO NOT make exceptions for this being a required training. Training is by invite only and is offered only three times a year (typically January, June and August), so be sure not to miss it! Volunteers must submit an application, have an interview and conduct a background check prior to being invited. A light breakfast and full lunch is provided.

Sounds great! How do I start?
The first step to becoming a volunteer is to complete our online Volunteer Application. From there you’ll be invited for an interview via e-mail and given instructions on how to complete our background check.

ADMINIStrative volunteers

What do administrative volunteers do?
Administrative volunteers assist our team in areas of development, facilities, finance, and service enterprise. Volunteer opportunities vary depending on current organizational need. While these roles do not directly interact with girls, they allow skilled volunteers to contribute their expertise to Girls Inc., often with more flexible schedules.

When are administrative volunteer shifts? What are the training requirements?
Because each role varies widely, please check the specific position description for the time and training requirements. Often these schedules are more flexible than our program volunteer shifts.

All positions will require a background check and attendance at our Anti-Oppression and Inclusiveness training. If the entails girl interaction, Volunteer Orientation may also be required.

Please check the individual volunteer position description for the schedule and training requirements, and ensure this aligns with your availability.

When are the next set of program dates?
Administrative volunteer roles have more flexible timelines and do not follow the same program calendar as program volunteers.

Sounds great! How do I start?
The first step to becoming a volunteer is to complete our online Volunteer Application. From there you’ll be invited for an interview via e-mail and given instructions on how to complete our background check.
